Top 5 Things You Need to Know When Traveling this Holiday Season

Imagine being on a beach, soaking up the sun, or skiing the Alps before Santa comes to visit. It may seem strange to some, but many families travel during the holiday season to enjoy far off places. Some will jet off to warmer climates, while others will travel across country to be with their families. No matter where you are heading, it’s important you are prepared and protected. So here are 5 things you need to know before you travel this holiday season.

1.)    Keeping your Passport Up to Date – It’s important if you are traveling to make sure you have your Canadian passport and that it is valid for travel. Passports in Canada are now valid for 5 to 10 years. Everyone in the family should have one, yes including the kids. Make sure you get your passport or updates soon because passport offices can be backlogged during the holiday season. You don’t want to put your vacation on hold because of a time delay.

2.)    Vaccinations and Medical Records – Depending on where you are going for the holidays, you may need certain vaccinations, not just to enter the country, but to ensure you will have a safe and protected trip. It’s a good idea to also keep a list of medications you are on and any medical records in case something happens while you are away. This way doctors can treat you more effectively.

3.)   Keep Yourself Protected With Insurance – One of the biggest issues people forget about is insurance while traveling. Insurance coverage can come through your employer, credit card or insurance brokers like Western Financial Group. Talk to a broker before you leave to ensure your policy meets your travel needs. This is important financially, medically and otherwise.

4.)    Special Insurance Coverage – Even if you have comprehensive coverage, you may not be protected fully for all you are planning to see and do while you are on holidays. Special coverage may be required for extreme activities such as bungee jumping, parasailing, boating and rock climbing. It’s important to know the country’s laws and to have insurance that covers you for all the activities you plan to enjoy.

5.)    How long will you be away makes a difference – You are covered for insurance while you are away but only for so long. If you plan to be away for an extended period, make sure your coverage doesn’t expire. This also goes for home owners and renters insurance if something should happen at home while you are basking in the sun. Double up and make sure you have all your ducks in a row to enjoy the vacation of your dreams.
