The Easiest Cold-Brewed Iced Coffee Concentrate Recipe You’ll Ever Make

Coffee is one of the oldest known beverages, but it’s undergone a lot of changes over the years.

When I was a little girl, I used to go out to dinner with my grandparents my grandpa would always ask the waiter if they had “brewed” decaf because most decaf coffee was instant back then.

My grandma would also make “iced coffee” at home. She would take the leftover coffee from the pot, add in ice and milk, and voila, iced coffee. Today you can get decaf, regular, espresso, or flavored coffees pretty much anywhere, including restaurants and grocery stores, and iced coffee is its own thing, not a way to use up leftovers (though still not a bad idea).

One of the biggest trends in the evolution of coffee has been iced coffee, though not made exactly the way grandma did. It does take a little more time (at least 6 hours), but creates a smoother, less acidic-tasting blend that is simply delicious.

I actually make it at home with Dunkin’ Donuts coffee because I love the flavor that this brand provides.

Here’s how to do it.

DIY Cold-Brewed Iced Coffee Concentrate

Yield: 8 cups iced coffee

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 12 hours

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coarsely ground coffee
  • 4 cups water

Directions:

  1. Coarsely grind one cup of whole coffee beans.
  2. Mix 4 cups of cold water with ground coffee. Cover and sit on the counter overnight (out of sunlight).
  3. Using a sieve and cheesecloth, strain the beans from the liquid in a separate container.
  4. To create your iced coffee drink, add equal parts of concentrate to water (for a single glass try 1/2 cup of concentrate with 1/2 cup of water), then add syrups, sugar, or the creamers of your choice. You can keep in the fridge for up to a week or so.

As you can see, making an iced coffee concentrate at home is a lot easier than it seems. Once the concentrate is made, you can add milk, syrups, or whatever you want to really give yourself a special treat in the middle of the day.

You can even use it in baking! Substituting some of the liquid in baked goods with coffee is a great way to add flavor, and if you keep the concentrate in your fridge you always have it ready to go.

Dunkin’ Donuts is one of my favorite brands for creating coffee drinks of all formats, and it’s readily available in ground, whole bean, or even k-cups at your local grocery store. They also have a delicious selection of “Bakery Series” and holiday flavors this fall (like Pumpkin Spice), so make sure you don’t miss out on those!
